If you're a mom, you know that “me time” can feel like a rare luxury. When your baby finally goes down for a nap, it’s tempting to tackle a to-do list or scroll through social media. But those little pockets of time can also be used to refresh and recharge, giving you the energy you need to keep up with your busy mom life. Here are a few gentle, meaningful ways to unwind while your baby sleeps—no chores or screens allowed.
Brew a Cup of Herbal Tea and Embrace a Quiet Moment
Sometimes, there’s nothing more comforting than a warm cup of herbal tea. The simple act of making tea can be a grounding ritual, creating a small oasis of calm in your day. Taking a few minutes to focus on boiling the water, watching the steam rise, and steeping the leaves helps shift your mind away from the whirlwind of responsibilities. When I make a cup of tea, I try to stay fully present in each step—from pouring the hot water over the tea bag to breathing in the delicate aroma as the flavors infuse.
I usually reach for soothing blends like chamomile or lavender, but if I need an energy boost, a gentle mint tea can be refreshing too. While the tea steeps, I like to take a deep breath and let myself truly sink into the moment. Wrapping my hands around a warm mug, I allow myself to relax, sip slowly, and just “be” for a little while. Those few peaceful minutes are such a gift—they help reset my mind and renew my energy so I can return to motherhood with a calmer outlook. Pick Up a Good Book or Magazine
If you’re a book lover like me, there’s no better escape than getting lost in a great story. Keeping a book or magazine on hand is a wonderful way to take a mental break from daily stresses. Even if you can only read a chapter or two, it’s a chance to engage your imagination and enjoy a change of pace. There are thousands of books you can indulge in but pick something you know will not take up a lot of brain power and you will be excited to sit down and read. I always have a choice of two books, one about parenting and one that is relaxing and girlie. Both I enjoy but depending on the day, I have a choice of what I feeling like.
My current favourite parent book is Hunt, Gather, Parent: What Ancient Cultures Can Teach Us About the Lost Art of Raising Happy, Helpful Little Humans by Michaeleen Doucleff. I have read this 2 times already because I learn something new every time. It explores the parenting methods of different cultures and it is honestly inspirational to read what other cultures do as parents and make me what to change my parenting ways.
Try a Short Meditation or Breathing Exercise
Meditation doesn’t have to be intimidating or time-consuming. Even five minutes of mindful breathing can work wonders for your stress levels and energy. Consider using a simple meditation app to guide you, or just sit quietly and focus on slow, deep breaths. The peace and clarity you gain in just a few minutes can completely change your mood. I like the calm app, it has so many different types of meditations, teachers, methods - there is something for everyone.
Try a Gentle Yoga Flow with “Yoga with Adriene”
Stretching can do wonders for a tired body, especially for moms who spend so much time holding and soothing little ones. If you’re looking for an easy way to unwind, check out Yoga with Adriene on YouTube. Adriene’s yoga routines are accessible, calming, and designed for all levels. Her gentle flow videos can help relieve tension in your shoulders, back, and legs, making you feel more refreshed and ready to jump back into mom mode. I have been using her videos for years and she is the best I have found on Youtube.
Give Yourself a Mini Facial or Skincare Session
Taking care of your skin can be both relaxing and revitalizing, and you don’t need a full hour to feel pampered, plus you probably don't have the time. Apply a soothing face mask, follow with a quick face massage, and let yourself unwind. It’s a simple but effective way to show yourself some love and leave you glowing by the time your baby wakes up.
I’m a big fan of the New York Biology Dead Sea Mud Mask. It’s affordable and makes my skin feel refreshed in just 10 minutes. Put the mask on, sit down, relax with a coffee and book and let it work its magic.
After I wash off the mask I apply my moisturizer quickly or I will do a full facial session with my products, depending on my timing, but either way I try to do a quick 5 minute facial massage. I like to use my hands if i'm in a rush or when I have the extra time I will use my rose quartz Gua Sha tools to glide across my skin. Listen to an Audiobook or Podcast
Audiobooks and podcasts can be a relaxing way to unwind, giving you a break from visuals and allowing you to close your eyes or even lie down. Look for something light or uplifting, or even a podcast that shares mom stories and advice. It’s a wonderful way to feel inspired and connected, even during solo moments.
If you are part of a book club or want to be, this is a great way to get through the book quickly and join in.
Journal or Write Down Your Thoughts
Sometimes, writing down your thoughts or experiences can be incredibly therapeutic. Grab a journal, pen, and jot down whatever comes to mind. You can write about your day, your thoughts, or even your dreams for the future. It’s a quiet moment to reflect and connect with yourself, even if only for a few minutes.
I love to write in my journal a lot about the future, on where I see my family in the years to come, what I want to change or what I want to accomplish. I use my journal to hold myself accountable for my goals and better myself.
Color or Do Something Creative
Adult coloring books, knitting, or even doodling can be calming and help relieve stress. It’s a way to unwind and use a different part of your brain, giving you a break from the mental load of parenting. It can make you feel like a child again, since we as adults do not allow ourselves to be playful like we used to.
Plus, it’s just plain fun! I found that when I allow myself to color it makes me more playful with my children because I experience a relaxing and creative time.
I’ve enjoyed the Secret Garden: An Inky Treasure Hunt and Coloring Book. It’s beautiful, and coloring feels surprisingly meditative.
Step Outside for Fresh Air
If you can, step outside for a few minutes of fresh air. A quick walk around the backyard or just sitting in the sun can do wonders for your energy and mood. Sometimes, a change of scenery is all it takes to feel a bit more refreshed and ready to tackle the rest of the day. I love to sit on my balcony with a cup or tea or coffee, with my book, journal or coloring book (monitor on hand) and take in these precious moments before it starts all over again.
As a mom, it’s easy to prioritize everyone else’s needs over your own, but remember that taking even a small amount of time for yourself can make a huge difference. These little moments to recharge while your baby sleeps are not selfish—they’re essential. From a quick tea break to a mini yoga stretch, these activities help keep you grounded and energized. So the next time your baby dozes off, skip the phone or chores and give one of these ideas a try. You deserve it!
