Motherhood in Summer

Motherhood in Summer

A summer afternoon can feel like a full-time job before your actual workday even ends. The kids are home, the house somehow gets messy five minutes after cleaning it, everyone is hungry every hour, and stepping outside feels like walking into an oven. Yet somehow, moms still answer emails, take calls, make lunch, break up arguments, fold laundry, and try to hold onto a tiny piece of sanity in the middle of it all.

That’s the reality of working motherhood during summer, beautiful, exhausting, loud, emotional, and somehow still filled with moments you never want to forget.

For many moms, summer sounds magical in theory. Slower mornings. Pool days. Popsicles. Family memories. But behind the scenes, it often feels like survival mode. There’s no school routine to lean on, no quiet mornings, and no real separation between work time and mom time. One minute you’re trying to finish a task on your laptop, and the next you’re hearing, “Mom, I’m bored,” for the tenth time before noon.

And when the heat becomes unbearable, it gets even harder.

Living through hot summer days with kids means spending hours trying to create entertainment inside the house without turning your home into complete chaos. Screens become tempting. Guilt sneaks in. You try sensory bins, crafts, games, snacks, indoor forts, baking projects, dance parties, anything to keep little minds busy while still handling real responsibilities.

Some days feel impossible.

There are moments when you sit in the bathroom for two minutes of silence wondering how it’s only 1 PM.

There are days you feel overstimulated before breakfast.

There are nights you finish work after everyone finally falls asleep because it was the only uninterrupted time you had all day.

And yet, moms continue showing up.

That’s the part nobody talks about enough, the resilience of motherhood.

Working moms become masters of adaptation. We learn how to answer emails while making sandwiches. We learn how to stay patient when we’re overstimulated and exhausted. We learn how to create joy out of ordinary moments because sometimes a living room picnic or movie afternoon is all we can realistically manage.

Summer motherhood isn’t always the picture-perfect version social media shows.

Sometimes it’s messy buns, reheated coffee, and trying to stop your kids from destroying the couch cushions while you finish one more task.

Sometimes it’s hearing “Mom!” 400 times a day.

Sometimes it’s feeling guilty because you can’t do everything perfectly.

But it’s also resilience.

It’s building memories in the middle of real life.

It’s realizing your kids probably won’t remember whether every day was perfectly planned, what they will remember your presence, your laughter, the silly indoor games, the movie nights, the kitchen dance parties, and the feeling of being safe and loved.

As moms, we carry so much during summer. The emotional load. The planning. The constant multitasking. The pressure to make childhood magical while also maintaining careers, homes, and our own mental health.

So if summer feels overwhelming right now, you are not failing.

You are doing one of the hardest jobs there is.

And even on the chaotic days, you are still creating a home filled with love, comfort, and memories your children will carry forever.

Sometimes survival mode is still motherhood done beautifully.

Here are some of the gadgets and toys I have found to give me "some peace" during the busy summers:

Stepping Stones Painting Kit

My Kids LOVED painting these in the back yard and then seeing their fine art displayed throughout the summer. Once they are actually engaged in this activity we went to the store to buy other types of stones to color.

Next was a HUGE deal last year - Reusable water balloons

My kids were entertained for almost an entire hour with these balloons, just a big bucket of water and let them go wild, I just kept myself and my laptop away from the water and it was BLISS.

This next one is a little on the crazier side, but hear my our, and Indoor Trampoline with Gymnastics

This one linked is amazing, it serves as a trampoline and also gymnastics. Thank me later.
